Môtiers was once a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It was part of the Val-de-Travers area. This region is located in the canton of Neuchâtel.
On January 1, 2009, Môtiers joined with several other towns. These included Boveresse, Buttes, Couvet, Fleurier, Les Bayards, Noiraigue, Saint-Sulpice, and Travers. Together, they formed the larger administrative district of Val-de-Travers.

Exploring Môtiers' History
Môtiers has a long and interesting past. One of its most notable features is an old castle.
The Ancient Castle
The old castle in Môtiers is very historic. Parts of it date back to the 14th century. It stands on a rocky hill about 1 kilometer south of the main village.
Today, the castle belongs to the canton of Neuchâtel. It is sometimes used for cultural events. These events can include concerts or exhibitions.
The Story of Absinthe
Môtiers is closely linked to a famous drink called absinthe. This drink is sometimes known as the fée verte, or "green fairy."
Absinthe's Special Connection
Absinthe was once banned in many places. However, the ban was lifted in Switzerland in March 2005. Since then, Môtiers has become a key place for making and promoting absinthe.
People in the Val de Travers area secretly made absinthe for many years. Because of this history, Môtiers was chosen for the national Maison de l'Absinthe. This special museum opened in July 2014. It celebrates the history and culture of absinthe. Even though a nearby town, Couvet, also claims to be where absinthe started, Môtiers is now the official home for its history.
