Macungie got its name from "Maguntsche". This was a name used around 1730 for the area where Macungie and Emmaus, Pennsylvania are today. "Maguntsche" is a word from the Lenape people, who were Native Americans. It means "bear swamp" or "feeding place of the bears". The town's official seal even shows a bear drinking water near some cattails.

The town was first started by Peter Miller in 1776. He named it Millerstown. In 1857, Millerstown officially became a borough.

Later, in 1875, the town's name was changed to Macungie. This was done to avoid confusion. There was another town in Pennsylvania also called Millerstown.
