Starting His Music Career
Hugo Leclercq began making music when he was 11 years old. At first, he made a type of dance music called "hands-up" under names like "Daemon" and "Wayne Mont." Around 2010, he started making house music and chose his current name, Madeon. This name is an anagram of his old nickname. In the same year, he won a remix contest for the song "The Island" by Pendulum.
The next year, he remixed songs by other electronic artists. On July 11, 2011, he uploaded a video of his "Pop Culture" mash-up to YouTube. This video made him famous around the world. It showed him mixing parts from 39 songs live using a Novation Launchpad. The video quickly became very popular, getting over six million views in just a few days. Madeon later shared that he got the idea, bought the Launchpad, and recorded the song all on the same day!
When Madeon performs live, he uses Launchpads and other equipment like Allen & Heath's Xone:K2 and Novation's Launch Control XL. He also uses a music software called Ableton Live. His first live show was in Paris in April 2011. He opened for the band Yelle. His first show in the UK was in London.
Madeon's music was often played on "15 Minutes of Fame," a part of Pete Tong's radio show on BBC Radio 1. His first single, "Icarus," and his remix of deadmau5's "Raise Your Weapon" were first played there. He also performed a 20-minute live set for Pete Tong's BBC Radio 1 event in January 2012.
Madeon had planned to release an EP in late 2011, but he decided to release several single songs instead. The first single, "Icarus," came out on February 24, 2012.
Madeon also toured with pop superstar Lady Gaga. He was an opening act for her Born This Way Ball tour. Later, he worked with Lady Gaga on three songs for her album Artpop: "Gypsy," "Mary Jane Holland," and "Venus."
In 2012, he was invited to play at four big American music festivals: Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Coachella in California, Lollapalooza in Chicago, and Electric Daisy Carnival in New York. He also played at several UK dance music festivals. Madeon released a new single called "Technicolor" on August 3, 2013.
