Madhav Krishnaji Mantri (born September 1, 1921, died May 23, 2014) was a famous Indian cricketer. He played in four important international matches called Test matches between 1951 and 1955. Born in Nashik, Maharashtra, he was a right-handed batsman who opened the batting, meaning he started the innings. He was also a special wicket-keeper, catching balls behind the stumps. Mantri played for the Mumbai cricket team and was a great leader. He led Mumbai to win the Ranji Trophy, a big cricket tournament, three times! He also captained the Associated Cement Company team to win another tournament, the Moin-ud-Dowlah Gold Cup Tournament, in 1962–63.

M. K. Mantri's Cricket Journey

Madhav Krishnaji Mantri started his Test cricket journey against England in India during the 1951–52 season. He also traveled with the Indian team to England in 1952, where he played two Test matches. Later, he toured Pakistan in 1954–55 for one Test match.

Amazing Batting Records

Mantri showed his best batting skills while playing for Mumbai. He scored an amazing 200 runs against the Maharashtra team in a semi-final match of the Ranji Trophy in 1948–49. This was his highest score ever in first-class cricket. In that same match, a total of 2376 runs were scored, which is still a record for the most runs in a single first-class game!

During a Test match in England in 1952, India had a tough start. Mantri was one of the four batsmen who got out quickly at the beginning of the second innings. This was a challenging moment for the team.

Family Connections

M. K. Mantri had a famous family connection in the world of cricket. He was the uncle of Sunil Gavaskar, who later became a legendary captain for the Indian cricket team. Sunil Gavaskar's son, Rohan Gavaskar, is also a cricketer, making Mantri his grand-uncle.

Later Life and Legacy

Until his passing, M. K. Mantri lived in Mumbai. For a long time, he was known as the oldest living Indian Test cricketer. He sadly passed away on May 23, 2014, after suffering a heart attack. His contributions to Indian cricket, especially his leadership for Mumbai, are still remembered.
