Makinen is a small community in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Makinen is located about 18 miles southeast of Virginia and 14 miles southeast of Eveleth. You can find it where Saint Louis County Road 16 and County Road 108 meet. U.S. Highway 53 is also close by.

Exploring Makinen's Location

The main part of Makinen is at the crossing of Wilson Road (County Road 16) and Long Lake Road (County Road 108). This area is home to the Makinen Post Office, which uses the ZIP code 55763. You'll also find the Makinen Community Center here.

Between 2006 and 2008, County Road 16 was rebuilt and changed a bit. The sharp corner near the center of Makinen was made smoother. This helps drivers on County Road 16 not have to slow down as much.

A small stream called Mud Hen Creek flows through the community. Other nearby places like Markham and Palo sometimes get their mail service from Makinen.

Makinen's Population

In 2010, the U.S. Census website reported that Makinen had 554 people living there. This number represents a specific area used for census counting.

Learning in Makinen

Most students from Makinen, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, attend schools in nearby towns. They usually go to classes in Cherry or Aurora.

Before 2011, many students from Makinen went to school in Cotton. However, the Cotton School closed that year. Other schools in the area that students might attend are in Eveleth, Gilbert, Biwabik, Hibbing, and Virginia.

Makinen's Past: A Look at History

Makinen's history is tied to Finnish farming. Finnish families began farming in the areas west of McDavitt Township, in places like Lavell and Cherry. Important Finnish communities grew in Cherry, Corbin, Forbes, Makinen, and along the Saint Louis River.

Makinen got its name from John Makinen. He and John Kovaniemi opened a store and post office there in 1905. Some current residents say Makinen was actually founded in 1900 by John Makinen. The area was once called Corbin, but that name couldn't be used when Makinen was officially established.

The community has celebrated important milestones. Makinen held a "Diamond Jubilee" in 1975, which marked 75 years. Then, in 2000, they had a Centennial celebration for 100 years.

There's a historic Finnish pioneer farm in southeastern Makinen that used to belong to Eli Wirtanen. Every September, the community hosts a Wirtanen Pioneer Farm festival for one weekend.

The Makinen Volunteer Fire Department also moved its location. It used to be on the lower level of the Makinen Community Center. Now, it's in the building that was once Makinen Elementary School (#79).
