Malcolm Martineau was born in 1960 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His mother, Hester Dickson Martineau, was also a pianist, and his father was Canon George Martineau. Malcolm went to school at George Watson's College in Edinburgh.

After school, he continued his studies at St Catharine's College at the University of Cambridge from 1978 to 1981. He then went on to study music at the Royal College of Music between 1981 and 1984.
