College Career at Wyoming
Floyd attended the University of Wyoming from 1999 to 2004. He studied health sciences. In 1999, he was a "redshirt" freshman, meaning he practiced but did not play in games.
As a sophomore, he was named a First-team all-conference player. This honor came from Football News and Sporting News. By the end of his college career, Malcom had 186 catches. He gained 2,411 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. In his senior year, he received an Honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference award.
Professional Football Career
Malcom Floyd was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in 2004. This event allows college players to show their skills to NFL teams. However, the San Diego Chargers signed him as an undrafted free agent after the 2004 NFL draft. This meant he joined the team without being chosen in the draft.
Starting Out with the Chargers
In 2004, Floyd joined the Chargers. He was first signed to the practice squad. Later, he was moved to the main team roster.
On January 2, 2005, Malcom started a game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He caught his first NFL touchdown pass. It was a 13-yard pass from Philip Rivers, which was also Rivers' first career touchdown. Malcom also helped set up another touchdown in that game.
In 2005, Malcom spent most of the season on the practice squad. He was later signed to the main roster but did not play in any games.
Making an Impact
In 2006, Malcom began to shine. He caught a 31-yard touchdown pass against the Baltimore Ravens. He also scored a nine-yard touchdown against the Pittsburgh. Later, he caught a career-long 46-yard touchdown pass against the Cincinnati Bengals.
After the Cincinnati game, he was named the Chargers Alumni Player of the Week. He had five catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. This was his first game with over 100 receiving yards. Unfortunately, an ankle injury later placed him on injured reserve, ending his season early.
In 2007, Malcom continued to make important plays. He had a 25-yard catch that helped set up a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers. He also made a 16-yard catch on a key third down against the Oakland Raiders.
Becoming a Key Player
In 2008, Malcom signed a new contract with the Chargers. He played in 13 games and started three of them. He finished the season with 27 catches for 465 yards and four touchdowns.
In 2009, Malcom became the Chargers' second main receiver. He played in all 16 games. He had 45 catches for 776 yards and one touchdown. He averaged 17.2 yards per catch.
In 2010, Malcom signed another contract. He played 11 games, catching 37 passes for 717 yards. He missed five games due to a groin injury. Despite the injury, he averaged 19.4 yards per catch. This showed he was a great deep-ball threat.
After the 2011 NFL lockout, Malcom re-signed with the Chargers. He missed four games due to injury that year. Still, he achieved a career-high 856 receiving yards. He averaged 19.9 yards per catch, which was the ninth highest in team history for players with at least 40 catches.
A cool fact from 2011: 41 of his 43 catches resulted in a first down. This 95.3 percent rate was the second-highest in NFL history for players with at least 32 catches!
Later Career and Retirement
In 2012, Malcom was on track for a 1,000-yard season. However, an ankle injury cut his season short by two games. He still led the team with a career-high 56 catches and scored five touchdowns.
In 2013, Malcom faced more injuries. He had a knee injury during practice, but luckily, it was not a ligament tear. Later that season, he left a game with a head injury. He was taken to the hospital but was awake and alert. He was placed on injured reserve due to a neck injury, ending his season.
In 2014, Malcom returned strong. He played in all 16 games, which was only the second time in his career. He had 52 catches and six touchdowns. His 856 receiving yards tied his career high and led the team again. He and teammate Jarret Johnson were named the Chargers' most inspirational players.
On June 9, 2015, the San Diego Chargers announced that Malcom Floyd would retire after the 2015 season.
