Mameyes Abajo is a special kind of neighborhood, called a barrio, located in the town of Utuado, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,136 people lived there. There's also a place called Mameyes Arriba (which means Upper Mameyes) nearby in Jayuya. Even though it's in a different town now, Mameyes Arriba used to be part of Utuado too, and it's higher up in the mountains. The beautiful Río La Venta (La Venta River) flows through Mameyes Abajo.
A Look Back in Time
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully part of it, like a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of people in Puerto Rico, called a census. This census found that 4,268 people lived in the Mameyes barrio at that time.
