History of Manchester
A post office opened in Manchester in 1817. The city got its name from Manchester, a large industrial city in England.
Historians say that a small village named "Mitchellsville" was already in the area. But when Coffee County was formed, the new county seat was named Manchester. People hoped it would become a big industrial city too. This was because the "Little Duck" and "Big Duck" Rivers flow through Manchester, providing lots of water power.
Lonnie J. Norman, who was the mayor for a long time, passed away in 2020.

Interstate 24 (I-24) runs through the northeast part of the city. You can get on or off I-24 at Exits 110, 111, and 114. Exit "112" was a special temporary exit just for the Bonnaroo Music Festival. Both the Little Duck and Duck Rivers have waterfalls. These waterfalls are located within Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park, just before the rivers meet.
The United States Census Bureau says that Manchester covers a total area of about 15.35 square miles (39.75 km²). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny part being water.
