Manny Lawson (born July 3, 1984) is an American former professional football player. He played as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). Manny played college football for the NC State Wolfpack. He was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft. Lawson also played for the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills.

Early Life and High School Sports

Manny Lawson was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina. His father was in the Air Force. Manny was great at both football and basketball when he was in middle school. He also went to Spring Creek Elementary School.

Manny attended Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro. During his senior year, experts rated him as one of the top players in North Carolina. He made 54 tackles and 12 sacks in defense. He also ran for 456 yards on offense. He was named the Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Manny was also a talented track & field athlete. He competed in many events, like the long jump, triple jump, and different sprint races.

College Football Career

Manny Lawson played college football at NC State. He was a key player for the Wolfpack from 2002 to 2005.

Starting Out (2002-2003)

In 2002, Manny played in every game as a backup outside linebacker. He made 35 tackles and helped block three punts. He was even named the team's Most Valuable Specialist. He also joined the Wolfpack's track & field team. He won the long jump and triple jump in his very first meet.

In 2003, he played in every game as an outside linebacker. He made 53 tackles and had three sacks. He also blocked two punts and helped break up five passes. He continued to compete in track and field. He won the ACC championship in the indoor long jump.

Becoming a Star (2004-2005)

In 2004, Manny became a starter at defensive end. He was named Second-team All-ACC. He was sixth in the conference with seven sacks. He also made 50 tackles and recovered two fumbles. He was recognized as one of the most valuable defensive linemen.

In 2005, Manny was chosen for the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team. He started almost every game at defensive end. He had a career-high 58 tackles. He was second in the conference with 10.5 sacks. He was also among the top players in the nation for tackles for loss.

Professional Football Career

Manny Lawson was a highly sought-after player in the 2006 NFL draft. He was known for his speed and athletic ability.

San Francisco 49ers (2006-2010)

The San Francisco 49ers picked Manny in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft. They wanted him to help their defense. Even though he played defensive end in college, the 49ers believed he could switch to linebacker. Manny quickly showed he could play linebacker well. He finished his first year with 2.5 sacks and one interception.

In his second week, he was named the NFL Rookie of the Week. He had three tackles and two sacks in that game. Sadly, in 2007, Manny tore a ligament in his knee during practice. This injury ended his season early. He continued to play for the 49ers until 2010.

Cincinnati Bengals (2011-2012)

In 2011, Manny Lawson signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. He played well and re-signed with the team in 2012.

Buffalo Bills (2013-2015)

In 2013, Manny signed a four-year contract with the Buffalo Bills. He switched between playing outside linebacker and defensive end during his time with the Bills. He was released by the Bills in 2016.
