Manuel María Uribe Ángel (born September 4, 1822 – died June 16, 1904) was a very important person in Colombia. He was a doctor, a geographer (someone who studies the Earth's features), and a politician. People called him the "father of medicine in Antioquia" because he helped medicine grow a lot in the Antioquia Department.
He was also famous for his studies of Colombia's geography and history. Manuel Uribe Ángel even served as the President of the Sovereign State of Antioquia and as a Senator for Colombia.

Life Story
Manuel María Uribe Ángel was born on September 4, 1822. His family lived in a large house called la Magnolia in Envigado, which is now part of the Antioquia Department. His parents, José María Uribe Arango and María Josefa Ángel Uribe, came from educated families.
Early Education and Medical Training
Manuel started his education in his hometown. Later, he moved to Bogotá, the capital city, to study more. On October 18, 1836, he began his studies at the Our Lady of the Rosary University. His brother and uncle were even professors there!
After finishing at Our Lady of the Rosary, he went on to study medicine. He attended the Central University of the Republic. In 1844, he officially became a Doctor in Medicine and Surgery.
Travels and Career
After becoming a doctor, Manuel Uribe Ángel traveled a lot. He lived for a short time in Quito, Ecuador, where he received another special degree in medicine. He also visited Peru, the United States, and then spent two years in Paris, France. In Paris, he specialized even more in his medical training.
When he returned to Antioquia, he married Magdalena Urreta Saldarriaga in 1854. He became a very well-known doctor. Manuel Uribe Ángel was famous not just as a doctor, but also as a smart and well-rounded thinker.
In 1871, he became a professor at the University of Antioquia. He taught many subjects, including medicine, French, and human anatomy. He also helped start the Academy of Medicine in Medellín and was its first president. He was also a member of the Colombian Academy of Language and the Colombian Academy of History.
Political Career
In 1875, Manuel Uribe Ángel traveled to the United States. This time, he went as a representative for his government. He also visited Mexico and the Antilles. When he returned to Colombia, the country was going through a civil war. Because of these events, he decided to get involved in politics. He joined the Colombian Liberal Party.
In 1877, Uribe became a Deputy (a type of lawmaker) for Antioquia. He was even chosen as the President of the group. On April 10, 1877, he was elected President of the Sovereign State of Antioquia. This was a state within the United States of Colombia.
His time as president was difficult because of growing tensions between the Liberal and Conservative political parties. Antioquia was a Conservative state, and the Liberal government was trying to take control. Manuel Uribe Ángel was replaced by Julián Trujillo Largacha on October 31, 1877.
In 1880, Uribe Ángel went to Panama. He represented Antioquia at the special ceremony to start building the Panama Canal. In 1882, he was elected as a Senator for Colombia.
Later Years and Legacy
Manuel Uribe Ángel passed away on June 16, 1904, in Medellín. He was 81 years old. For the last seven years of his life, he had been blind. He and his wife, Magdalena, never had children. He was buried in the San Pedro Cemetery.
People remembered him as a very wise and scientific man. The Colombian Congress even passed a law to honor him. They arranged for two oil paintings of him to be made. One was for his widow, and the other was for a library.
In his hometown of Envigado, there is a hospital and an educational institute named after him. The Academy of History of Antioquia also created a special medal in his honor. It is called the Order of the Centenary of Manuel Uribe Ángel. This medal is given to people who help study or preserve the history of Antioquia.
Writings
Manuel Uribe Ángel wrote many books and articles. Some of his works were published after he passed away. His writings covered topics like history, geography, and medicine. One of his most famous books is Geografía general y compendio histórico del estado de Antioquia en Colombia (General Geography and Historical Summary of the State of Antioquia in Colombia), published in 1885.
