History of Marceline
In 1887, a railway company began building a train line. This line connected Chicago and Kansas City, Kansas. It passed through an area that would soon become Marceline.
The first piece of land for the town was sold in January 1888. Marceline officially became a city two months later. By the end of that year, it had a railway roundhouse and a train yard. These were important for the railway.
The railway line became part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. In 1903, Marceline became the headquarters for the Missouri part of this railway.
The town was named after Marcelina, who was the wife of a railroad worker. A post office has been open in Marceline since 1887.
Today, Marceline is best known as the childhood home of Walt Disney. It is also famous for inspiring the original Main Street, U.S.A. in Disney theme parks. You can visit the Walt Disney Hometown Museum there.
