Marcell Jansen (born 4 November 1985) is a German professional footballer. He played for teams like Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern Munich, and Hamburger SV. He was known for his speed and accurate passes. Marcell often played as a left-back or wing-back, but he could also play as a left-winger. Today, he is the president of Hamburger SV.

Marcell Jansen's Football Journey
Starting at Borussia Mönchengladbach
Marcell Jansen grew up in Mönchengladbach, West Germany. He joined the youth team of Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1993. He worked his way up through the club's youth system.
In 2003, at 17 years old, Marcell was named as a substitute for a main league game, but he didn't play. His first actual game for the senior team was on 4 December 2004, when he was 19. He signed his first professional contract with the club in January 2005.
Marcell scored his first goal for Mönchengladbach on 3 April 2005. He played 18 games in his first season. In the 2005–06 season, he continued to play regularly, sometimes as a left-back and sometimes in midfield. His good performances even earned him a call-up to the German national team. He played 33 games that season and scored one goal.
In the 2006–07 season, Marcell continued to be a key player for Mönchengladbach. He scored his first goal of that season on 2 March 2007. By the end of the season, he had played 24 games and scored one goal.
Playing for Bayern Munich
In March 2007, Bayern Munich, a very famous German club, showed interest in Marcell. In May 2007, it was announced that he would join Bayern in July for about €10 million. Marcell was excited about this big step in his career.
Marcell made his debut for Bayern Munich in a friendly match on 15 July 2007, where he also scored his first goal for the club. He played his first main league game for Bayern on the opening day of the 2007–08 season. He faced some injuries during this season, but he still played an important role. Bayern Munich won the league title that season, and Marcell played 33 games in total.
Time with Hamburger SV
On 28 August 2008, Marcell Jansen joined Hamburger SV, signing a five-year contract. He made his debut for Hamburg just two days later. He quickly became a regular player in midfield.
Marcell scored his first goals for Hamburg on 22 February 2009, scoring twice in one game. He played 40 games and scored 4 goals in his first season with Hamburg.
The 2009–10 season started with an injury for Marcell, keeping him out for two months. After returning, he scored his first goal of the season on 8 November 2009. He scored four more goals by early 2010. He played 28 games and scored 9 goals that season.
In the 2010–11 season, Marcell started playing as a left-back again. He faced more injuries, which limited his playing time. He scored his first goal of the season on 26 February 2011. He finished the season with 17 games and 2 goals.
Before the 2011–12 season, some big clubs were interested in Marcell, but he decided to stay with Hamburg. He returned from injury and played in the first game of the season. He often played in midfield that season. On 5 November 2011, he scored his first goal of the season. He played 31 games and scored 5 goals.

Marcell extended his contract with Hamburg until 2015 before the 2012–13 season. He mostly played as a left-back. He scored his first goal of the season on 28 April 2013. He played 29 games and scored one goal.
In the 2013–14 season, Marcell continued to play at left-back. He scored his first goal of the season on 28 September 2013. He even captained Hamburg for the first time on 24 November 2013. He played 27 games and scored one goal. Hamburg managed to stay in the top league after a special play-off match.
In his final season, 2014–15, Marcell played at left-back and then in left-midfield. He faced more injuries. He played 16 games and scored 2 goals. At the end of the season, Hamburg decided not to extend his contract.
Retirement from Professional Football
After leaving Hamburg, Marcell Jansen decided to retire from professional football at age 29. He felt that Hamburg was the only team for him. Many people were surprised by his decision, but Marcell explained that he didn't like some parts of the football business.
After retiring, Marcell became a football expert for Sky Sport. On 19 January 2019, the members of Hamburger SV voted for Marcell Jansen to become the new club president.
Marcell Jansen's International Career
Playing for Germany's Youth Team
Marcell Jansen first played for the Germany under-21 national team in November 2004. He made his debut on 16 November 2004. He scored his first goal for the U21 team on 16 February 2005. He played four games and scored once for the U21 side.
Playing for the German National Team

In September 2005, Marcell was called up to the senior German national team for the first time. He made his debut on 3 September 2005.
He was chosen for the German squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He played in one match during the tournament, which was the game for the bronze medal against Portugal. Germany won the bronze medal.
Marcell scored his first goal for the senior national team on 2 June 2007, in a big 6–0 win against San Marino. He was part of Germany's team for the Euro 2008 tournament. He played in the final match, where Germany lost to Spain.
Before the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Marcell had an injury, but he still made it into the squad. He played in the third-place match against Uruguay and scored a goal, helping Germany win the bronze medal again.
After 2010, Marcell wasn't called up for the national team for almost three years. He returned to the team on 24 March 2013 for a World Cup qualification match. He played in friendly matches against Ecuador, Italy, and England in 2013.
In March 2014, Marcell played in a friendly match against Chile but got injured. He was nominated for the preliminary 2014 FIFA World Cup squad, but unfortunately, he was cut from the final team due to his injury. Germany went on to win the World Cup that year.
Marcell Jansen's Life Outside Football
Marcell Jansen has some food intolerances, meaning he can't eat foods with lactose (found in dairy) or certain grains.
He supports a project called "Hamburger Weg," which helps people in the city of Hamburg. He even raised money for this project by participating in a poker game. Marcell has said that his father was a very important person in his life.
In 2015, Marcell invested in a sports company called "Gymjunky" with some other people.
