Maria Anna of Austria (born Maria Anna Josepha; 7 September 1683 – 14 August 1754) was an Archduchess from Austria. She was the daughter of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, a very important ruler. Later, she became the Queen of Portugal when she married John V of Portugal. She was also a regent for Portugal from 1742 to 1750. This happened when her husband became ill. In Portugal, people often called her Mariana.

Her Early Life

Maria Anna Josepha was the fifth child of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor and Eleonore Magdalene of Neuburg. She was born in Linz, a city in Austria. Her family had to leave Vienna, the capital, because of a Turkish army attack.

Maria Anna had two brothers who later became Holy Roman Emperors: Joseph I and Charles VI. Through Charles VI, she was the aunt of Empress Maria Theresa, another very famous ruler.

Becoming Queen of Portugal

On 27 October 1708, Maria Anna married her first cousin, John V of Portugal. Their mothers were sisters, which made them cousins. When she married John V, she became the Queen of Portugal. She and King John V had six children together.

Leading Portugal as Regent

In 1742, Maria Anna took charge of Portugal as its regent. This happened because her husband, King John V, had a stroke. This illness left him partly paralyzed and unable to rule properly.

Maria Anna ruled Portugal until 31 July 1750. On that day, King John V passed away. After his death, Maria Anna gave up her power to their oldest son, Joseph I of Portugal. She died in 1754 at the Belém Palace in Lisbon. Her body was buried in Lisbon, but her heart was taken to Vienna and buried in the imperial crypt there.

Maria Anna and King John V had six children:
