Her Early Life
Maria Anna Josepha was the fifth child of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor and Eleonore Magdalene of Neuburg. She was born in Linz, a city in Austria. Her family had to leave Vienna, the capital, because of a Turkish army attack.
Maria Anna had two brothers who later became Holy Roman Emperors: Joseph I and Charles VI. Through Charles VI, she was the aunt of Empress Maria Theresa, another very famous ruler.
Becoming Queen of Portugal
On 27 October 1708, Maria Anna married her first cousin, John V of Portugal. Their mothers were sisters, which made them cousins. When she married John V, she became the Queen of Portugal. She and King John V had six children together.
Leading Portugal as Regent
In 1742, Maria Anna took charge of Portugal as its regent. This happened because her husband, King John V, had a stroke. This illness left him partly paralyzed and unable to rule properly.
Maria Anna ruled Portugal until 31 July 1750. On that day, King John V passed away. After his death, Maria Anna gave up her power to their oldest son, Joseph I of Portugal. She died in 1754 at the Belém Palace in Lisbon. Her body was buried in Lisbon, but her heart was taken to Vienna and buried in the imperial crypt there.
Her Children
Maria Anna and King John V had six children:
- Maria Barbara of Portugal (born 4 December 1711 – died 27 August 1758). She married Ferdinand VI of Spain.
- Pedro of Portugal (born 19 October 1712 – died 24 October 1714). He was the Prince of Brazil.
- Joseph I of Portugal (born 6 June 1714 – died 24 February 1777). He married Mariana Victoria of Spain.
- Carlos of Portugal (born 2 May 1716 – died 30 March 1730). He never married.
- Peter III of Portugal (born 5 July 1717 – died 25 May 1786). He married Maria I of Portugal and had children.
- Alexander of Portugal (born 24 September 1723 – died 2 August 1728). He passed away when he was very young.
