Abasolo's Early Life and the Fight for Freedom
José Mariano de Abasolo was born in 1783. He became a key figure in Mexico's struggle for independence. This was a time when Mexico was ruled by Spain. Many people wanted Mexico to be a free country.
In 1809, Abasolo joined a secret group. This group met in Valladolid, which is now called Morelia. They were planning how to gain independence. Their secret plans were discovered. However, Abasolo and another leader, Ignacio Allende, were not caught. They quickly joined another secret group in Querétaro.
Abasolo's Role in the Independence Movement
Abasolo was a wealthy man. He used his own money to help the independence movement. His financial support was very important. He did not take part in many battles himself. But he helped the army get what they needed.
On September 15, 1810, the war for independence began. Hidalgo ordered Abasolo to take control of all weapons. These weapons were stored in the arsenal of Dolores. Later in 1810, Abasolo went with the independence army. They traveled to San Miguel el Grande, now called San Miguel de Allende. Then they went to Celaya. There, Abasolo was made a captain. He joined a special army unit called the Dragones de la Reyna regiment.
Key Battles and Capture
On September 30, 1810, the city of Guanajuato was taken. The independence army then moved towards Valladolid (now Morelia). But they decided not to attack that city. The army, which had grown to 80,000 soldiers, started moving towards Mexico City. For reasons that are not fully known, Hidalgo chose not to attack Mexico City.
In Acámbaro, Abasolo was given a higher rank. He became a field marshal, a very important army leader. He fought in several important battles. These included the Battle of Monte de las Cruces, the Battle of Aculco, and the Battle of Calderón Bridge.
On March 21, 1811, Abasolo and other leaders were captured. This happened in Acatita de Baján, Coahuila. They were taken prisoner by the Spanish army. Hidalgo and Allende were sentenced to death. This happened in Chihuahua. Abasolo received a different sentence. He was sent to prison for ten years. He was held in the Santa Catalina castle in Cádiz, Spain. He died there on April 14, 1816.
