Marion Forks is a small, unincorporated community located in Linn County, Oregon, United States. It sits along the North Santiam Highway, about 15 miles (24 km) south of the city of Detroit.

The community gets its name from a nearby river fork. This is where Marion Creek flows into the North Santiam River. Marion Creek used to be called the Marion Fork Santiam River.

Marion Forks is part of the Santiam Canyon School District. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has a fish hatchery just south of the community. Also, the Willamette National Forest has a campground near the hatchery, right next to Marion Creek.

Two historic buildings in the Marion Forks area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Independence Prairie Ranger Station and the Marion Forks Guard Station.

History

"Marion Forks Lodge" Highway 222 - Oregon (7839696066)
Marion Forks Lodge in 1964

In 1866, a man named William Horn claimed land here. He hoped to sell timber to the Oregon Pacific Railroad. This railroad was being built east from Corvallis. However, the railroad stopped about twelve miles short of Marion Forks. Because of this, Horn's property was not developed for a long time.

In 1932, Scott Young bought the property. He had recently moved from Cascade Locks. Young worked for the Forest Service and saw a chance to help road crews. These crews were working on Highways 20 and 22. They needed places to stay and eat.

The Young family used wood they found to build cabins and a cookhouse. This cookhouse later became the Marion Forks Lodge Restaurant. The restaurant was rebuilt after fires in 1947 and 1972. It became the main spot for a small group of vacation cabins and homes. A few dozen people lived there.

The Marion Forks community grew a bit more in 1951. That's when the Marion Forks Hatchery was built. This hatchery helped replace fish lost because of the Detroit Dam downstream. Even though the restaurant closed for a short time in 2008, Marion Forks is still a popular stop for travelers. It is also home to people who have lived there for many years.

The original Marion Forks Lodge was built in 1933 by Nan and Scott Young. This was soon after the Santiam Highway pass opened. Sadly, the Marion Forks Lodge burned down completely in 1972.

Climate

Marion Forks has a climate with warm, dry summers. The average monthly temperatures do not go above 71.6 °F (22 °C). This type of weather is called a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. On climate maps, it is known as "Csb."
