The Mariposa sedge (Carex mariposana) is a special type of plant that looks a lot like grass. It belongs to a group of plants called sedges. These plants are often found growing in wet or damp areas.

Where the Mariposa Sedge Grows

This interesting sedge plant naturally grows in the Sierra Nevada mountains. You can find it in both California and the far western part of Nevada. It loves to grow in moist places, especially in open, grassy areas known as meadows.

What the Mariposa Sedge Looks Like

The Mariposa sedge grows in thick bunches, forming dense clumps of stems. These stems can reach a height of about 90 centimeters (which is almost a meter tall!). It also has long, narrow leaves that can be up to 30 centimeters long.

Flowers and Fruit

The plant produces a special cluster of flowers called an inflorescence. This cluster can be dense or spread out, and it often has spikes that are gold, brown, or reddish in color. After the flowers, the plant produces small fruits. Each fruit is covered by a protective sac called a perigynium. This sac is usually greenish or a coppery brown color, and it often has visible veins and a winged shape.
