The Battle of Blair Mountain

Marmet played a part in a very important event in American history. In August 1921, thousands of coal miners gathered in Marmet. They were part of a movement to improve working conditions. These miners then marched about 60 miles through different counties. Their goal was to help other miners who had been arrested.

This event led to a big conflict known as the Battle of Blair Mountain. It was the largest battle in the history of the labor movement in the United States. It was also the biggest uprising on U.S. soil since the American Civil War. The fighting continued until President Harding sent in the army. Once the military arrived, the miners stopped fighting and put down their tools.
