Blige faced many challenges in her youth. She used these difficult experiences to write powerful and emotional songs later in her career.

In 1988, when she was 17, she recorded a cover of a song by Anita Baker at a mall recording booth. Her mother's boyfriend gave the tape to a music executive at Uptown Records. Two years later, in 1994, she released her second album, My Life. This album was very personal and emotional. It talked about the struggles she was going through at the time. Fans connected with her honest lyrics. My Life also became a huge hit and is considered one of her best works.
