Masajuro Shiokawa (塩川 正十郎, Shiokawa Masajūrō, October 13, 1921 – September 19, 2015) was an important Japanese economist and politician. He held many high-level jobs in the Japanese government.

Early Life and Education
Masajuro Shiokawa was born in Fuse City, which is now part of Higashi-Osaka City in Osaka Prefecture. He studied economics at Keio University, a well-known university in Japan. He finished his studies there in 1944. After university, in 1946, he started his own company called Mitsuaki Corporation.
Political Career Highlights
Shiokawa began his career in public service. From 1964 to 1966, he worked for the Fuse City government. He helped manage the joining of several towns to create Higashi-Osaka City in 1966.
In 1967, he was elected to the House of Representatives. This is like being elected to the parliament or congress in other countries. He represented the 4th District of Osaka.
Key Government Roles
Over the years, Shiokawa held many important positions in the Japanese government:
- From 1972 to 1973, he was the Parliamentary Vice Minister of International Trade and Industry.
- He served as Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary from 1976 to 1977.
- He was the Commerce and Industry Committee Chairman from 1979 to 1980.
- From 1980 to 1981, he was the Minister of Transport under Prime Minister Zenkō Suzuki.
- He became the Minister of Education from 1986 to 1987, serving under Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone.
- In 1989, he was the Chief Cabinet Secretary for three months under Prime Minister Sōsuke Uno. This is a very important role, helping the Prime Minister manage the government.
- From 1991 to 1992, he was the Minister of Home Affairs.
Later Political Years
In 1995, Shiokawa became the Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). This is a major political party in Japan. However, he lost his seat in the elections held in 1996. He was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 2000.
In 2001, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi chose Shiokawa to be the Minister of Finance. This job involves managing the country's money and economy. He resigned from this role in 2003 and decided not to run for re-election that year.
Other Activities
Outside of politics, Masajuro Shiokawa was also involved in other areas. He was the dean of Toyo University, which means he was a senior leader at the university. He also directed the Kansai Shogi Hall (Shogi is a Japanese board game, similar to chess). He was also active in the Japan Sumo Association, which manages the traditional Japanese sport of sumo wrestling.
Death
Masajuro Shiokawa passed away on September 19, 2015, in Osaka, Japan. He was 93 years old and died from pneumonia.
Honours and Awards
Masajuro Shiokawa received several awards for his long service and contributions:
- He was given the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. This is a high honor from the Japanese government.
- In 2004, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities from The University of Cambodia.
- He also received an honorary award from Malaysia in 2004, becoming an Honorary Commander of the Order of Loyalty to the Crown of Malaysia (P.S.M.).
