History of Maxwell

The community of Maxwell is named after the person who founded it. One important historical spot nearby is called Swifts Stone Corral. It is recognized as California Historical Landmark No. 238.

Swift's Stone Corral

The original owner and builder of this unique stone corral was Granville P. Swift. He was from Kentucky. In 1847, Swift started ranching in the Stone Creek Valley in Colusa County. By 1850, he and his partner, Frank Sears, needed a corral for their animals. Since there were no trees nearby to use for timber, they built the corral using flat stones. These stones were found scattered all over the area.
