A Look Back: Mayfield's Story
Mayfield Dairy Farms was started way back in 1923. It was founded by T.B. Mayfield, Jr. Today, his grandson, Scottie Mayfield, helps run the company.
Mayfield products are sold in many states across the southeastern U.S. These states include Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Florida. They also sell products in Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
In 1990, a bigger company called Dean Foods bought Mayfield Dairy. This changed who owned the company for a while.
Cool New Ideas: Mayfield's Innovations
Mayfield Dairy Farms is known for coming up with new and clever ideas. The company is proud that its founder, T.B. Mayfield, Jr., had the first milk plant in the area that could pasteurize milk. Pasteurization is a heating process that makes milk safe to drink.
In 1970, Mayfield's factory in Athens was the first in the dairy world to make its own plastic milk jugs right there in the plant. This was a big step forward!
Later, in 1988, Mayfield was the first dairy to use a special plastic milk jug. This jug was opaque, meaning you couldn't see through it. It helped protect the milk from ultraviolet light (UV light), which can make milk spoil faster.
In 1995, Mayfield helped launch a new type of milk bottle. It was called the "Chug" milk bottle. This was a single-serving bottle, perfect for one person. It helped milk compete with single-serving soft drinks. This made more people drink milk!
In 2002, they came out with a new ice cream carton called "Clik-Top." This carton had a special seal that was easy to open. It also had a tab that locked the carton closed. This kept the ice cream fresh in the freezer.
In 2006, Mayfield started a company blog. This blog had stories from inside the business. It also shared news about new ice cream flavors. Even customers could share their stories!
In 2007, the company won an Effie Award. This award is given for successful marketing campaigns. Mayfield won for promoting four new ice cream flavors. They asked customers to "vote" for their favorite flavor instead of offering discounts.
