The Story of Mayfield Dairy Farms
Mayfield Dairy Farms started in 1923. It was founded by T.B. Mayfield, Jr. His grandson, Scottie Mayfield, now helps run the company. Mayfield Dairy Farms employs about 350 to 400 people.
Mayfield products are sold in many states. These states are Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Delaware. Dean Foods bought Mayfield Dairy in 1990.
Cool Inventions and Ideas
Mayfield Dairy is known for trying new things. The company says that its founder, T.B. Mayfield, had the first milk plant in the area. This plant could pasteurize milk. Pasteurization is a process that heats milk to kill harmful germs.
In 1970, the Mayfield factory in Athens was the first to make its own plastic milk jugs. They did this right inside the plant. In 1988, Mayfield was the first dairy to use a special plastic milk jug. This jug was opaque, meaning you couldn't see through it. It helped protect the milk from ultraviolet light, which can make milk spoil faster.
In 1995, Mayfield launched a small milk bottle called "Chug." This bottle was made for Dean Foods. The Chug bottle helped more people drink milk. It made milk easier to grab and drink, just like soft drinks. In 2002, Mayfield introduced a new ice cream carton. It had a "Clik-Top" lid that was easy to open and could be sealed again. This was a new idea for ice cream packaging.
In 2006, Mayfield started a company blog. The blog had posts from CEO Scottie Mayfield. It also shared stories from inside the business. Customers could even send in their own articles. The blog was seen as a good example of using social media for marketing. In 2007, the company won an Effie Award. This award is for successful marketing campaigns. Mayfield won for selling four new ice cream flavors without discounts. They asked customers to "vote" for their favorite new flavor.
