History of McComb
How McComb Started
McComb was founded in 1872. A man named Henry Simpson McComb worked for a railroad company. He decided to move the railroad's repair shops from New Orleans, Louisiana. He wanted to avoid the busy city life there.
So, the railroad bought land in Pike County. Three smaller towns nearby, Elizabethtown, Burglund, and Harveytown, joined together. This is how McComb was formed. Main Street became the center of the new town, with many shops and businesses.
The Civil Rights Era
In the 1960s, McComb was a place where people worked hard for civil rights. The SNCC started a project here in 1961. They helped African Americans register to vote. Some local groups tried to stop them.
In 1961, some students like Brenda Travis were arrested. They had a sit-in at a bus station. After Brenda was expelled from school, many students walked out. This was called the Burglund High School Walk Out. Students were determined to make a change.
Later, in 1964, civil rights workers returned to McComb. They worked on voter registration during Freedom Summer. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, there were some difficult times. But people kept working for equal rights. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 helped more people vote.
Other Important Events
On January 10, 1975, a very strong tornado hit McComb. It caused a lot of damage to homes and businesses. Nine people lost their lives, and many were hurt.
On October 20, 1977, a plane carrying the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed near McComb. Several people on the plane died, including the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant.
Recent History
In 2006, Zach Patterson became McComb's first African American mayor. This was an important step for the city.
In 2018, voters in McComb elected Quordiniah Lockley as mayor. Also, for the first time, most of the city board members were African American.
