History of McNab
How McNab Got Its Start
The town of McNab began thanks to a man named Charles McNab. He came to the United States in 1841 from Muthill, Perthshire, Scotland. In 1860, he bought land in the Red River valley, not far from the town of Fulton.
Building a New Life After the Civil War
Charles McNab was a carpenter. He had married into a family that owned a large farm in Alabama. Later, his wife's family sold their Alabama land and moved to a property near Shreveport, Louisiana.
The Civil War (1861-1865) put Charles McNab's plans on hold. He couldn't start farming his new Arkansas land during the war. But after the war ended in 1865, he moved to Arkansas and began planting cotton.
Soon, Charles, his wife, and their young son moved from Louisiana to live on the new farm. Several people who had recently gained their freedom from slavery also moved with them to help work the farm.
The Railroad and the Post Office
About 30 years later, the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway (also known as Frisco) built a train track through the area. A small station was built for passengers and goods.
A post office was also set up across the road from the station. It was located in the back of a general store run by the McNab family. At that time, the person who ran the post office got to choose its name. Mrs. Charles F. McNab, who was the postmistress, decided to name it "McNab."
Charles West McNab, the original owner's grandson, continued to farm the land until 1927. He sold the last 40 acres of the family's property there in 1956.
