As a teenager, Benoist performed at Disneyland for three summers. She was part of a musical theater school group from Littleton, Colorado. She also acted in many local plays, like Cinderella and Bye Bye Birdie. In 2006, The Denver Post newspaper called her one of Colorado's "Can't Miss Kids."

After graduating from Arapahoe High School in 2007, she moved to New York City. She wanted to pursue a career in musical theater. She graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in 2011 with a degree in Theatre Arts.
