Mellingen has a very long history! It was first mentioned in records way back in 1045. At that time, it was called Mellingen. Later, between 1217 and 1239, it was sometimes known as Menelingen.

Mellingen covers an area of about 4.8 square kilometers (1.9 square miles). A good part of this land, about 36%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 32% of the area. Buildings and roads make up about 27% of the land. The rest, about 5%, includes rivers or lakes.

The town's old center is very unique. It's a medieval city that is compact and surrounded by walls. This old part of Mellingen sits right on both sides of the Reuss River. Newer parts of the town have grown up around this historic center. Mellingen has become an important place in the smaller Unteres Reusstal region.
