Metaline's Story: A Look Back

Metaline has an interesting past, especially with mining. In 1906, the Pend Oreille River was made deeper at a place called Box Canyon. This helped boats travel to Metaline more easily.

Soon after, the Metaline Mine began to operate. It produced lead from a type of rock called limestone. This limestone is part of the Metaline Formation, which was formed a very long time ago. By 1951, the mine had produced a lot of lead and also a good amount of zinc. In 1955, Metaline had a population of 400 people.

Metaline officially became a town on October 6, 1948.
