Mewelde Jaem Cadere Moore (born July 24, 1982) is a former American football player. He played as a running back in the National Football League (NFL). The Minnesota Vikings chose him in the fourth round of the 2004 NFL draft.

Moore also played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the Steelers, he won a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl XLIII. They beat the Arizona Cardinals in that game. Before playing professionally, he played college football for the Tulane Green Wave. He was a great player at Belaire High School in his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

College Football Career

Mewelde Moore had an amazing college career at Tulane. He is one of only two players in NCAA history to rush for 4,000 yards and receive for 2,000 yards. He ranks 11th in Division I history for all-purpose yards, with 6,505 yards.

Moore ran for over 100 yards in 22 games. This set new records for Tulane and Conference USA. His 36 career touchdowns are the second most in Tulane and C-USA history. He also set Tulane's single-season rushing record twice. He ran for 1,421 yards as a sophomore and 1,138 yards as a junior.

2000 Season Highlights

In 2000, Moore was named the Freshman of the Year for Conference USA. He was also chosen as a Freshman All-America player by The Sporting News. Moore started 7 of the 10 games he played for the Tulane Green Wave.

He caught a 74-yard pass for a touchdown against Army. He also had 131 rushing yards and 56 receiving yards against East Carolina. Moore ran for 114 yards against Cincinnati. He also gained over 100 rushing yards against Memphis and Southern Methodist.

2001 Season Highlights

In 2001, Moore was named to the 1st-Team All-C-USA. He set a new Tulane single-season rushing record with 1,422 yards. He broke the 100-yard rushing mark 7 times that season.

Moore also set a school record with 249 rushing yards in one game. He became the first Tulane player to gain over 100 yards in both rushing and receiving in a single game. This happened against Navy, where he had 131 rushing yards and 130 receiving yards. He also ran for 201 yards and had 70 receiving yards against Southern.

2002 Season Highlights

In 2002, Moore was again named to the All-C-USA team. He became only the second player in Tulane history to run for 1,000 yards in two years in a row. He led his team in both rushing and receiving yards.

Moore averaged 129.5 all-purpose yards per game. He scored two rushing touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass against East Carolina. He also ran for a season-high 147 yards against Southern. Moore caught a 47-yard touchdown pass against TCU. He ran for 116 yards and had 6 catches for 80 yards against Hawaii in the Hawaii Bowl.

2003 Season Highlights

In 2003, Moore earned 1st-Team C-USA honors. He was on the watch lists for the Doak Walker Award and Walter Camp Award. These awards honor the best running back and player in college football.

Moore started the first 9 games of the season. He missed the last 3 games because of a broken hand that needed surgery. He was second in C-USA with 101.0 rushing yards per game. He also had 147.0 all-purpose yards per game. Moore ran for 100 yards and had 116 receiving yards against Northwestern State. He scored three touchdowns on passes. He also posted 114 rushing yards against Texas and had two touchdown runs. Moore ran for a season-best 159 yards against Memphis. He had 123 yards on the ground and a 25-yard touchdown against Louisville.

Interestingly, Moore was also drafted by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2000 Major League Baseball draft. However, he chose not to sign with them.

Professional Football Career

Mewelde Moore was chosen by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2004 NFL draft. He was the 119th player picked overall in the fourth round.

Pittsburgh Steelers

On March 3, 2008, Moore signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He got a chance to start games when other running backs were injured. Even though he was a backup for most of the year, he gained 588 rushing yards and scored 5 rushing touchdowns. He also had 320 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown. He even threw one passing touchdown!

At the end of the 2010 season, Moore and the Steelers played in Super Bowl XLV against the Green Bay Packers. He had 13 rushing yards and 11 kickoff return yards in their 31–25 loss.

Indianapolis Colts

Mewelde Moore signed a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts. He did not score a touchdown with the Colts and was later released. The Colts re-signed him in December to play against Houston.

Personal Life

Mewelde Moore worked hard in college. He took many classes in spring 2004 to graduate on time. He earned two degrees from Tulane University: one in Finance and one in Accounting. Moore was known for winning math contests before he went to Tulane.

Moore is very active in his community. He works with organizations like the National Football Foundation and United Way. He also supports youth education through his "Mewelde Moore Knowledge First Foundation." Moore often visits his old college, Tulane, to help with fundraising events.

He is married to his college girlfriend, Tymeka. She played basketball for Tulane. His brother-in-law, Willie, played basketball for the University of Houston. Football commentator Chris Berman gave him the nickname "Waltzing" Mewelde.
