Michael Carter-Williams (born October 10, 1991) is an American former professional basketball player. He was chosen 11th overall in the first round of the 2013 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. Before that, he played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange. Michael was named NBA Rookie of the Year in 2014. He also played for teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets, and Orlando Magic. He announced his retirement in October 2024.

High School Basketball Journey
Michael Carter-Williams started his high school basketball career at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School in Hamilton, Massachusetts. As a freshman, he was 5 feet 9 inches tall. He led his team in scoring, averaging 20 points per game, and helped them win a league championship.
In 2008, Michael moved to St. Andrew's in Barrington, Rhode Island. He lived at the school for his last three years of high school. During these years, he was a starter and averaged 25.4 points per game. In his senior year, he averaged 23.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game.
After his second year of high school, Michael decided to play basketball for Syracuse University. He had also received scholarship offers from other colleges. He played on the same AAU team as Nerlens Noel, who later became his teammate on the 76ers.
College Basketball Career
Michael Carter-Williams had a quiet first year at Syracuse in 2011–12. He played limited minutes, averaging 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds in 26 games.
During the 2012 offseason, Michael worked very hard to improve his game. He lifted weights, drank protein shakes, and practiced shooting every morning. This hard work paid off, and he became a standout player for Syracuse in the 2012–13 season. He started all 40 games that season. He averaged 11.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 2.7 steals per game.
On March 28, 2013, he scored a career-high 24 points. He led Syracuse to a 61–50 victory over the top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in the NCAA tournament. This win helped Syracuse reach the Elite Eight. After the season, he was recognized as an honorable mention All-American. He also earned second-team All-Big East honors.
On April 10, 2013, Michael decided to enter the NBA draft. This meant he would not play his last two years of college basketball.

Philadelphia 76ers (2013–2015)
Becoming Rookie of the Year
Many experts thought Michael Carter-Williams would be a top point guard in the 2013 NBA draft. He was chosen 11th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers. He officially signed with the 76ers on September 24, 2013.
On October 30, 2013, Michael made an amazing NBA debut. He scored 22 points, had 12 assists, 7 rebounds, and 9 steals. This was the most steals ever by a rookie in their first game! The 76ers won 114–110 against the defending champion Miami Heat. A few days later, he scored 26 points and had 10 assists in a win against the Chicago Bulls. He was named the Player of the Week in his very first week in the NBA. This was a rare achievement, last done by Shaquille O'Neal in 1992.
On December 3, 2013, Michael achieved his first triple-double. He had 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in a close 126–125 win over the Orlando Magic. In the same game, another rookie, Victor Oladipo, also got his first triple-double. This was the first time in NBA history that two rookies had triple-doubles in the same game!
Michael was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for October and November 2013. He led all rookies in scoring, assists, and steals during that time. He won the award again in January and March 2014. He was the first 76ers rookie to win this award three times.
On March 10, 2014, Michael recorded his second triple-double. He had 23 points, 10 assists, and 13 rebounds. He became the first rookie in 76ers history to have two triple-doubles in one season. He finished his rookie season averaging 16.7 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. On May 5, 2014, he was named the 2014 NBA Rookie of the Year.
2014–15 Season Highlights
Michael missed the start of the 2014–15 season due to shoulder surgery. He returned on November 13, scoring 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. On November 29, 2014, he recorded his third triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high 16 assists. He continued to achieve triple-doubles, getting his fourth on December 13 and his fifth on January 30.
Milwaukee Bucks (2015–2016)
On February 19, 2015, Michael was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. He made his debut for the Bucks on February 25, scoring 7 points and 8 assists in a win against his former team, the 76ers. On April 8, he scored a season-high 30 points.
Michael started the 2015–16 season well for the Bucks. He averaged 12.8 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds in the first four games. He later missed some games due to an ankle injury. On March 7, 2016, he was ruled out for the rest of the season because of a hip injury.
Chicago Bulls (2016–2017)
On October 17, 2016, Michael was traded to the Chicago Bulls. He played his first game for the Bulls on October 27, scoring five points. On November 1, 2016, he was sidelined for several weeks due to a knee injury and a wrist sprain. He returned to play on December 26, 2016. On February 3, 2017, he had his best game of the season with 23 points, nine rebounds, and six assists.
Charlotte Hornets (2017–2018)
Michael signed with the Charlotte Hornets on July 7, 2017. On March 9, 2018, he was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury.
Houston Rockets (2018–2019)
On July 6, 2018, Michael signed with the Houston Rockets. On December 19, 2018, he helped the Rockets set an NBA record. He hit a 3-pointer that gave the Rockets their 26th 3-pointer of the game. This was a new league record. On January 7, 2019, Michael was traded back to the Chicago Bulls, but he was immediately released by the Bulls.
Orlando Magic (2019–2023)
On March 15, 2019, Michael signed a 10-day contract with the Orlando Magic. He signed a second 10-day contract on March 25. On that same day, he scored a season-high 15 points in a win against his former team, the Philadelphia 76ers. On April 4, 2019, the Magic signed Michael for the rest of the season.
He re-signed with the Magic on July 10, 2019, and again on November 24, 2020. On August 23, 2021, Michael had surgery on his left ankle and missed the start of the 2021–22 season. He was released by the Magic on February 10, 2022, without playing a game that season. He re-signed with the Magic on February 26, 2023.
Mexico City Capitanes (2023)
On October 30, 2023, Michael signed with the Mexico City Capitanes in the NBA G League. He left the team on December 26, 2023, for personal reasons. In October 2024, Michael Carter-Williams confirmed in an interview that he had retired from playing basketball.
Post-Playing Career Activities
After his basketball career, Michael Carter-Williams has been involved in several projects. In 2021, he started an NFT company called DeFi Crypto Connections with partners Brooks Brown and Austin Greishober.
He also works with MCW Starz, a youth sports organization. This organization was founded by his mother, Mandy, and his step-father, Zach. Michael also started a sports trading card project with baseball player Blaze Jordan.
In January 2025, Michael joined ESPN as a college basketball analyst. He appears on the ACC Network show Nothing But Net. In May 2025, Michael participated in a charity boxing event and won his fight. He has mentioned that he plans to continue boxing and might even pursue it as a career.
Personal Life
Michael Carter-Williams is the son of Earl Williams and Mandy Zegarowski. His step-parents are Zach Zegarowski and Rosa Williams. He has a younger sister named Masey, and three younger brothers: Marcus, Max, and Adrian. His parents met while they were both basketball players at Salem State University in Salem, Massachusetts.
