Michael Flaksman (born May 3, 1946 – died October 18, 2019) was a talented American cellist. A cellist is a musician who plays the cello, a large string instrument. He was known for his amazing performances and for teaching many students.

Michael Flaksman's Early Musical Journey

Michael Flaksman started learning the cello at a young age. His first teachers were Ernst Silberstein, Leonard Rose, and Maurice Eisenberg, who were all great musicians.

When he was just seventeen, Michael performed as a soloist with the famous Cleveland Orchestra. This was a huge achievement for a young musician! In 1964 and 1965, he was invited to the Marlboro Festival. There, he took special classes with the legendary cellist Pablo Casals. He also played music with other famous artists, including Rudolf Serkin.

Advanced Studies and Teaching

After studying at Harvard University, Michael Flaksman continued his musical education. He learned about harmony and composition from Nadia Boulanger, a very important music teacher. He also studied the cello further with Antonio Janigro.

Michael became Antonio Janigro's assistant in both Stuttgart and Salzburg. Later, he took over Janigro's teaching position in Stuttgart. From 1991, he taught at the High School of Music in Heidelberg/ Mannheim, helping many young cellists.

His first performance in Europe was in Salzburg in 1974. In the same year, he won a prize at the International Cello Competition in Bologna. In 1975, he received the Casals Centenary Award in Barcelona, which was a special honor.

Performing and Teaching Worldwide

Michael Flaksman performed in many concerts around the world. He played solo, in chamber music groups (small groups of musicians), and with large orchestras. He traveled all over Europe and to the Far East.

He also led master classes in many countries. These classes helped other cellists improve their skills. He taught in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, and Croatia.

Famous Recordings

Michael Flaksman recorded music for many radio stations. He also made several CDs. Some of his most famous recordings include all the cello suites by J. S. Bach. He also recorded all the music for cello and piano by Gabriel Fauré.

Inspiring Other Musicians

Michael Flaksman was the Honorary President of the Italian Cello Consort. This is a group of cellists started by his student and assistant, Giovanni Ricciardi. This shows how he inspired his students and helped them achieve their own musical dreams.

Michael Flaksman passed away on October 18, 2019, at the age of 73. He left behind a wonderful legacy of music and teaching.
