The Mid-Western Development Region (in Nepali: मध्य पश्चिमाञ्चल विकास क्षेत्र - Madhya Pashchimānchal Bikās Kshetra) was one of Nepal's five main development areas. It was located in the west-central part of the country. Its main office, or headquarters, was in a city called Birendranagar in Surkhet district.

Geography of the Region

This region was bordered by the Western Development Region to its east. To the south, it shared a border with Uttar Pradesh in India. On its west side was the Far-Western Development Region. And to the north, it touched the Tibet Autonomous Region in China.

The Mid-Western Development Region was the largest development region in Nepal by land size. It covered about 42,378 square kilometers (about 16,362 square miles). However, it was the fourth largest in terms of how many people lived there, with about 3,546,682 residents. This meant it had the lowest population density of all the regions, with only about 83.7 people living in each square kilometer.

Rivers and Lakes

The most important river in this region was the Karnali River. It is also known as Kauriala and becomes the Ghaghara river when it flows into India. The Karnali is a very important river that flows into the Ganges river. It is the longest river in Nepal, stretching about 507 kilometers (315 miles) within the country.

Some other rivers that flow into the Karnali include the West Rapti, Bheri, and Seti rivers.

Nepal's biggest lake, Lake Rara, is also found in this region. It is located in the Mugu district, which is part of the Karnali Zone.

Important Cities

Some of the notable cities in this region included Birendranagar, Chinchu, Babiyachour, Tribhuvannagar (also known as Ghorahi), Nepalgunj, and Tulsipur.

How the Region is Divided

The Mid-Western Development Region was divided into 3 main areas called Zones. These zones were further split into a total of 15 Districts.
