Miguel Ríos Campaña (born on June 7, 1944) is a famous Spanish singer and composer. He is known as one of the first artists to bring rock and roll music to Spain.

Miguel Ríos's Early Life

Miguel Ríos was born in a neighborhood called La Cartuja in Granada, Spain. He was the youngest of seven children. When he was fifteen, he started working in a local bar. He loved rock and roll music. This led him to join a song contest at a radio station. He and his friends won a prize for singing "You Are My Destiny" by Paul Anka.

Starting His Music Career

In 1961, when Miguel was sixteen, he moved to Madrid. He recorded his first four songs there. People started to know him as Mike Ríos, the King of Twist. He became quite popular on television in the early 1960s. In 1964, he decided to use his real name, Miguel Ríos, again. This meant he no longer had the support of his band, Los Relámpagos (The Lightning). He also appeared in a film called Dos chicas locas, locas ("Two Crazy Girls").

Becoming a Superstar

In 1970, Miguel Ríos became a huge star in Spain. His song "Himno de la alegría" (Hymn of Joy) was very special. It used music from the famous ninth symphony by Beethoven. This song was part of a music style called symphonic rock.

"A Song of Joy" Success

"Himno de la alegría" was released in North America and the United Kingdom as "A Song of Joy". It came out in May 1970 on the A&M Records label. The song sold over one million copies in the U.S. and Canada. It reached number 16 on the UK singles charts in August 1970. It also earned a gold record in the U.S. The song was number one in Australia and Canada. Miguel Ríos sold three million copies of this song worldwide. It reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970. His next song, Like An Eagle, also did well in Canada and Australia.

Later Career and Big Concerts

In 1980, Miguel Ríos released one of his most popular songs, "Santa Lucía." This song was a ballad written by Argentinian artist Roque Narvaja. It was part of his album Rocanrol bumerang.

The Rock and Rios Album

In 1982, Miguel Ríos released Rock and Rios. This was a live album recorded during two concerts in Madrid. Many music critics and fans think this album is one of the most important Spanish rock works. It was a big moment for the music industry in Spain. Miguel Ríos sold over 450,000 copies of Rock and Rios in less than a year. This concert celebrated his 20 years in music. What was special was that he released the album at the same time he started his tour. Both were very successful, making him one of the richest entertainers of that time. Rock and Rios also showed how Spanish society was changing. It was seen as a start for "La Gran Movida" or La Movida Madrileña, which was a cool youth culture movement in Spain in the 1980s.

Summer Tours

In 1983, Miguel Ríos released his tenth studio album, The rock of a summer night. He went on his biggest tour with this album. Other artists like Luz Casal and Leño performed before him. Ríos filled 32 soccer fields and bullrings across Spain. More than 700,000 people came to his concerts. A year later, he released the album La encrucijada. In 1985, he put out Rock en el ruedo, which was a collection of his greatest hits. It also had a new song. His next tour was not as successful. He released another album, The Year of the Comet, in 1986.
