Playing in the NHL
Milan Michálek started his NHL career with a goal in his very first game! But in his next game, on October 11, 2003, he got a serious knee injury. He tore his right ACL, which is an important ligament in the knee.
After having surgery on his knee, Milan played in the American Hockey League (AHL). Sadly, he injured his knee again in January. During the 2004–05 NHL lockout, when NHL games were paused, Milan spent his time getting his knee healthy again.
First Full Seasons
Milan played his first full season with the San Jose Sharks in 2005–06. He scored 17 goals and earned 35 points. For his great play, the Sharks gave him their PlayStation Rookie of the Year award.
In the 2006–07 season, Milan became a very strong player. He was fast and could score goals, getting 26 goals and 66 points. After this season, he signed a long contract with the Sharks. He played on the Sharks' top line with star player Joe Thornton in 2007–08.
Moving to Ottawa
On September 12, 2009, Milan was traded to the Ottawa Senators. A trade in hockey means players switch teams. He moved to Ottawa along with Jonathan Cheechoo and a draft pick. In return, the Sharks got player Dany Heatley.
With the Senators, Milan scored his first career hat-trick on October 15, 2009. A hat-trick means scoring three goals in one game! Two of his goals were when his team was shorthanded, and one was during a power play. Later, he scored two goals against his old team, the Sharks.
All-Star Season
On December 13, 2011, Milan got a concussion after bumping into his teammate Erik Karlsson. A concussion is a brain injury that can happen from a hit to the head. He had to miss five games because of it. At that time, he was leading the entire NHL in goals with 19!
Fans voted for him to start in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game. This is a special game where the best players from different teams play together. Milan finished that season with a career-high 35 goals, which was his best scoring year.
Final Years in the NHL
During the 2015–16 season, Milan was injured. On February 9, 2016, he was part of a big trade. He moved to the Toronto Maple Leafs. This trade involved nine players and was mainly about Dion Phaneuf going to Ottawa. Milan played his last NHL games with the Maple Leafs.
Playing for His Country
Milan Michálek also played for the Czech Republic's national ice hockey team. He played in the 2010 Winter Olympics with his brother, Zbyněk. He scored two goals in five games during those Olympics.
The two brothers also played together for the Czech team in the 2014 Winter Olympics. They helped their team finish sixth in the tournament. Milan also won three bronze medals at the World Championships with the Czech team.
