Millbrook's Rich History
Millbrook has a long and interesting history. It includes an older village called Robinson Springs.
The first permanent home in the area, "Ellerslie," was built in 1818. It was built by Bolling Hall, a Congressman and a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Another early home, "Thornfield," was finished in 1820. Both of these historic homes are still standing today.
Robinson Springs became a popular summer spot for wealthy families from Montgomery. The Robinson Springs United Methodist Church was started in 1828. Its current building was completed in 1848. In 1852, Robinson Springs hosted Alabama's very first state fair.
An early historian named Shadrack Mims described Robinson Springs around 1850. He said it was a very healthy and beautiful place. He noted its cool, clear water and pleasant surroundings. He thought it was perfect for a summer getaway or a school.
During the American Civil War, many young men from the area joined the fight. In 1862, Bolling Hall III gathered a group of men. They joined a larger group called Hilliards Legion. No major battles happened in Millbrook during the war.
After World War I, the communities of Millbrook, Coosada, and Robinson Springs grew. They became known as the "Tri-Community." They developed schools, churches, and even had train service.
Millbrook's growth really sped up in the 1970s. This was thanks to the building of Interstate 65. This major highway made it easier for people to travel to and from the area. Many people looking for a more relaxed lifestyle moved to Millbrook. Because of this growth, Millbrook officially became a city in 1977.
