Millbrook is a lively area, or suburb, located in Southampton, England. It's part of the beautiful county of Hampshire. Long ago, Millbrook was a larger area called a 'civil parish.' Over time, some parts of it, like Freemantle, Regents Park, and Redbridge, became their own separate areas. Even today, people sometimes still call these places part of Millbrook. The name Millbrook comes from a small stream, or 'brook,' which is now known as Tanner's Brook.

Millbrook's Past

Early Events

On November 28, 1830, workers in Millbrook and Shirley held a peaceful protest. They were asking for better pay. This happened during a time when many farm workers across England were protesting for fairer wages.

Growing Up

The Millbrook railway station first opened in 1861. This made it easier for people to travel to and from the area. In the past, Millbrook also had public swimming baths and a ferry that went to Marchwood.

Important Buildings

The Church of the Holy Trinity is a well-known building in Millbrook. It was built between 1873 and 1880. A famous architect named Henry Woodyer designed it. In 1969, this church was given a special status. This means it is an important historical building.

Millbrook Towers, which was the tallest building in Southampton at the time, was built in 1965. It was designed by architects Ryder and Yates.

Famous People

Several notable people were born in Millbrook. John Ralfs, a famous botanist from the 1800s, grew up here. Footballers Kevin Gibbens and Phil Warner, who both played for Southampton F.C., are also from Millbrook. The comedian Mike Osman was born here too.

Changes Over Time

On May 16, 1925, Lucy Hodder and the English artist Harry Epworth Allen got married at Holy Trinity Church. During World War II, the village was bombed on July 20, 1940.

Much of the old village was later removed. This happened when Millbrook Road was made wider to help with traffic. In August 2022, the Church of the Holy Trinity was put up for sale. This was because fewer people were attending services there.

In 1951, about 6,386 people lived in the civil parish of Millbrook. In 1954, the parish was officially joined with Southampton and Eling. Today, Millbrook is part of the larger area of Southampton.

Millbrook Today

How Millbrook is Divided

Today, the Millbrook area is split by a main road called the A35 dual carriageway, also known as Tebourba Way. Generally, the areas to the west of this road have council housing estates. To the east, you will find private homes, including areas like Regents Park and Freemantle.

The housing estates in Millbrook include Millbrook Park, Mansel Park, Wimpson Estate, Redbridge Estate, Maybush, Brownhill, and the Channel Islands Estate. There is also an industrial area nearby. This area is close to the Southampton container port.

Important Roads

The main A33 road is a key route into the city centre from the west. It passes through Millbrook. This road helps to separate the industrial part of Millbrook (to the south) from the homes (to the north).

Local Facilities

Millbrook is home to the Western Community Hospital. There is also a large Tesco supermarket for shopping. You can find a small retail park with a bowling alley and two hardware stores. Along Millbrook Point Road, there is a Goals soccer centre. This centre has 12 pitches for five-a-side football games.

Green Spaces

Millbrook has many green parks. This is why it is sometimes called the Millbrook Park Estate. These parks include Green Park, Mansel Park, Test Park, and Millbrook Recreation Ground. There are also many school playing fields. A large green area cuts through the main estate. It stretches from the Millbrook roundabout to the Top Shops on Windermere Avenue.
