Early Life and Education
Milo Yiannopoulos was born as Milo Hanrahan in Chatham, England. His father has Greek and Irish family, and his mother is Jewish. He says he is a practicing Roman Catholic. His parents divorced when he was a child.
He was raised by his mother and her second husband. As a teenager, he lived with his grandmother, whose last name, Yiannopoulos, he later chose to use.
Yiannopoulos went to Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys. He later attended the University of Manchester but left before finishing. He then studied English at Wolfson College, Cambridge, but was asked to leave in 2010.
Career Highlights
After leaving university, Yiannopoulos first worked at The Catholic Herald. In 2009, he started writing about technology for The Daily Telegraph. His writing often shared his thoughts on the internet and social media.
In June 2022, Yiannopoulos became an unpaid intern for American politician Marjorie Taylor Greene.
The Kernel Website
In November 2011, Yiannopoulos helped start a website called The Kernel. In 2013, the website faced problems and closed for a short time. Yiannopoulos was the editor-in-chief at that time. It reopened later that year.
In 2014, another company bought The Kernel. After this, Yiannopoulos stopped being the editor-in-chief but continued to advise the company.
Breitbart News Role

In 2014, Yiannopoulos began writing for Breitbart News. In October 2015, Breitbart put him in charge of their new "Breitbart Tech" section. He was the editor of this section until he left the company in February 2017.
Views and Controversies
In 2017, some emails from Yiannopoulos's time at Breitbart were made public. These emails showed that he and his writer often asked for ideas from people linked to certain extreme groups.
Yiannopoulos and a co-author wrote an article for Breitbart that described a movement called the "alt-right" as "dangerously bright." This article was criticized by many who felt it excused extreme parts of the movement.
The Anti-Defamation League describes Yiannopoulos as part of the "alt-lite." This term is used for people who are sometimes linked to the alt-right but are not openly white nationalist or antisemitic.
In 2017, a video showed Yiannopoulos singing at a bar. In the video, some people in the crowd were seen making a Nazi salute. Yiannopoulos said he did not see these salutes because he has very poor eyesight. A bartender from that night said Yiannopoulos and his group were asked to leave after the salutes.
After these events, some of Yiannopoulos's supporters stopped working with him.
Public Appearances
On February 1, 2017, Yiannopoulos was scheduled to speak at UC Berkeley. Many people protested against the event. Some protesters caused damage, set fires, and threw things. Because of safety concerns, the university cancelled the event. The damage was estimated to be about $100,000.
In November 2017, Yiannopoulos went on a tour in Australia. During his shows, he sometimes caused controversy. Outside his events in Melbourne and Sydney, there were clashes between different protest groups. Yiannopoulos said the violence was caused by those who wanted to stop free speech.
Books Written
Yiannopoulos has published several books. His 2007 poetry book, Eskimo Papoose, was later noted for using lines from pop music and TV without saying where they came from. He stated this was done on purpose and that the work was meant to be funny.
In 2016, he announced an autobiography called Dangerous. He received money in advance for the book. It quickly became a best-seller before it was even published.
However, in February 2017, the publisher decided not to release the book. Yiannopoulos then decided to publish the book himself in May 2017. It became a best-seller on several lists, including New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
He also self-published other books in 2019, including How to Be Poor and How to Be Straight. He also wrote The Trial of Roger Stone and Middle Rages.
His Views
Political Beliefs
In the United Kingdom, Yiannopoulos supported the Conservative Party. Later, he applied to join the UK Independence Party. He used to support Donald Trump. He has been called "the face of a political movement," but he says his main interests are "pop culture and free speech." In December 2020, Yiannopoulos said he would work to "destroy the Republican Party."
On Islam
Yiannopoulos often criticizes Islam. He has said that "fear of Islam is entirely rational." He believes that Islam, not just extreme groups, is responsible for violence against women and homosexuals. He has stated he is talking about "mainstream Muslim culture."
On Women and Feminism
Yiannopoulos often criticizes feminism. He has written articles that some people say are against women.
He believes feminists are "easy to wind up." He does not agree with the idea of a gender pay gap. He also claims that feminism has become "a mean, vindictive, sociopathic, man-hating movement." Yiannopoulos thinks women should not be in military combat units.
On Homosexuality
In 2011, Yiannopoulos described being gay as "a lifestyle choice guaranteed to bring [gay people] pain and unhappiness." He also said, "I'd describe myself as 90-95% gay. I would never have chosen to be this way." In 2017, he married his long-term boyfriend.
In 2021, Yiannopoulos stated he was "no longer homosexual." He said he would start supporting efforts to improve the public image of conversion therapy, which aims to change a person's sexual orientation.
Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant
In January 2016, Yiannopoulos started a "Privilege Grant" to help white men. He said it was to balance scholarships for women and minorities. He tried to raise money for this grant.
In August 2016, it was reported that a large amount of money from the grant was missing. Yiannopoulos apologized for managing the grant poorly. In March 2018, he confirmed that the fund had been closed.
Financial Situation
In December 2018, it was reported that Yiannopoulos had more than $2 million in unpaid debts. This included money owed to his own company, a foundation, his former lawyers, and others.
Kanye West Campaign Work
In 2022, Yiannopoulos worked briefly with rapper Kanye West on his 2024 presidential election campaign. Yiannopoulos said he helped arrange a meeting between West and Donald Trump to "make Trump's life miserable." He wanted to send a message to Trump that he had "neglected, ignored, abused the people who love him the most." In May 2023, Yiannopoulos was rehired by West to manage his campaign.
