Mohamed Zidan's Football Journey
Early Days in Denmark
Mohamed Zidan was born in Port Said, Egypt. He started playing football as a striker for his hometown club, El Masry, in 1998. After a short time, his family moved to Denmark.
In Denmark, Zidan was discovered by the club Akademisk Boldklub (AB) in 1999. In June 2003, he moved to another club called FC Midtjylland (FCM). There, he became the top scorer in the 2003–04 season. He was also named the "Rookie of the Year" and then "Player of the Year" the next season! He scored 30 goals in 47 games for FCM. His amazing nine goals in the first three games at FCM's new stadium even made people call it "Zidan Arena."
Playing in Germany: Werder Bremen and Mainz 05
Zidan's great skills in Denmark caught the eye of many big European clubs. In 2005, he was loaned to the German club Werder Bremen. Later that year, he was bought by Werder Bremen.
On August 31, 2005, Zidan was loaned to Mainz for the 2005–06 season. He scored nine goals in 26 games for Mainz. He played so well that Werder Bremen brought him back. He even scored a goal in a cup semi-final against Hamburger SV in 2006, helping his team reach the final.
However, Zidan faced some injuries and didn't play as much. In January 2007, he moved back to Mainz permanently. This was a big deal because it was the most expensive player purchase in Mainz's history! He quickly scored six goals in his first five games, helping Mainz move up in the league. He was even named "Player of the Month" in Germany in February.
Fans at Mainz loved Zidan. He was known for his amazing skills and goals. In one game against Bayern Munich, he dribbled past a defender and scored against the famous goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. He also scored a super-fast goal against Werder Bremen in just 14 seconds! This was one of the fastest goals ever in the Bundesliga.
Zidan dreamed of playing for huge clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool, or Manchester United. Even though he scored many goals, he couldn't save Mainz from being moved down to a lower league in 2007. But his talent was noticed by many top clubs.
Time at Hamburger SV
Because of his strong performance, Zidan moved to Hamburger SV in June 2007. He was given the number 7 shirt, which was a special number at the club. He scored his first official goal for Hamburger SV in a cup match.
Zidan scored his first Bundesliga goal for HSV against Bayern Munich. This goal was important because it ended Bayern's winning streak and was the first goal their goalkeeper, Oliver Kahn, had let in that season.
Joining Borussia Dortmund
Zidan's time at Hamburg was short. In August 2008, he moved to Borussia Dortmund. This move reunited him with his former coach from Mainz, Jürgen Klopp. Zidan was given the number 10 shirt. He played his first game for Dortmund against Bayern Munich.
In April 2010, Zidan got a knee injury that kept him from playing for about six months. But he was part of the team when Borussia Dortmund won the Bundesliga championship in 2011 and again in 2012!
Back to Mainz and Later Clubs
In January 2012, Zidan returned to his old club, Mainz. He made history by scoring in his first six games for Mainz, something no other player had done in the Bundesliga before! He also helped his team win a game against Köln by scoring and assisting two goals.
After Mainz, Zidan played for Baniyas in the United Arab Emirates. He later played for El Entag El Harby in Egypt before ending his professional career.
Playing for Egypt
Mohamed Zidan played for the Egyptian national team from 2005 to 2012.
At first, there was some confusion about why he didn't play for Egypt in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations. He later explained it was due to a leg injury. He scored his first goal for Egypt in a qualification match for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
Africa Cup of Nations Success
Zidan played a big role in Egypt's success in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. In their first match against Cameroon, he scored two goals, helping Egypt win 4-2. He was a key player throughout the tournament, often coming on as a substitute and creating chances. In the final against Cameroon, he helped set up the winning goal for Mohamed Aboutrika.
In the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, Zidan scored two goals against Brazil in an exciting 4-3 loss.
He was also a star in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. He scored a goal against Algeria in the semi-final, which Egypt won 4-0. In the final, he again helped set up the winning goal, this time for Mohamed Nagy Gedo.
Life After Football
Mohamed Zidan also holds German citizenship. He has been married twice and has children.
After retiring from playing, Zidan became a football analyst. In 2014, he worked for the beIN SPORTS channel, sharing his knowledge about German football matches.
