After finishing his basic schooling in Kan, he went to Borhan High School in Tehran. In 1947, he moved to Qom to study at a religious school. There, he learned from important teachers. These included Ruhollah Khomeini, who later became Iran's Supreme Leader.
In 1961, he returned to Tehran to teach religious subjects. During this time, many religious leaders protested against the ruler, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi. Mahdavi Kani joined these protests and worked with Ayatollah Khomeini. He was even put in prison by the Shah's government three times for his actions.
Political and Religious Career
After a major religious leader named Ayatollah Boroujerdi passed away, Mahdavi Kani continued his fight against the Pahlavi government. He had started this work when he was just 18 years old. He played a very active role in the Islamic Revolution movement led by Khomeini.
Before the Islamic Revolution, Khomeini chose him to be part of the Revolutionary Council. After the revolution, he took on many important roles in government and religion. He was a co-founder of the Combatant Clergy Association in 1977 and later became its leader. In 1979, he chose not to join the Islamic Republican Party.
