Mohombi Nzasi Moupondo, born on October 17, 1986, is a talented musician, singer, composer, and dancer. He has roots in both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sweden. He grew up near Stockholm, Sweden. Mohombi was the first artist signed by famous producer RedOne to his record label, 2101 Records.

From 2000 to 2008, Mohombi was part of a hip hop group called Avalon with his brother, Djo Moupondo. Mohombi released his first solo song, "Bumpy Ride", in August 2010. This song became a worldwide hit. It was followed by his first album, MoveMeant, in February 2011.

His Early Life

Mohombi was born to a Swedish mother and a Congolese father. He has 14 brothers and sisters. In 1999, when Mohombi was 13, his family moved from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Stockholm, Sweden.

Mohombi's parents always encouraged him to listen to many different types of music. He studied at Rytmus Music High School in Stockholm. In 2002, he performed in a Swedish play called Wild Side Story. He later earned a bachelor's degree in music from the Royal College of Music, Stockholm. Mohombi can speak many languages, including English, French, Lingala, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish.

Being Part of Avalon

In Stockholm, Mohombi and his brother Djo Moupondo, who was a local DJ, formed the group Avalon. They mixed dancehall and hip hop music with African beats. Between 2004 and 2008, Avalon sold over half a million records. They also won the Kora Awards, which are like the Grammy Awards for African music. Mohombi also became a skilled songwriter during this time.

In 2005, Avalon tried to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 at Melodifestivalen 2005. They sang a song called "Big Up" in English, French, and Lingala. Avalon also performed at music festivals and released an album called Afro-Viking in 2007.

His Solo Career Begins

Mohombi worked with Swedish rapper Lazee on a song called "Do It" in 2010. It became a top-ten hit in Sweden. In Los Angeles, Mohombi met the Swedish-Moroccan producer RedOne. Mohombi's first solo song, "Bumpy Ride", was the first song released on RedOne's record label, 2101 Records. It came out in the United States in August 2010.

Mohombi then released "Miss Me" in the United Kingdom, featuring American rapper Nelly. His third song, "Dirty Situation", featured R&B singer Akon. Mohombi's first album, MoveMeant, was released in Europe in February 2011. He also sang on the song "Coconut Tree" with Nicole Scherzinger. In 2011, Mohombi performed "Coconut Tree" with Katerina Stikoudi in Greece. He was nominated for Best Swedish Act at the 2011 European Music Awards.

In 2014, Mohombi started his own music label called La Clique Music. He then released his album Universe.

In July 2015, Mohombi was invited to represent young people from his country at a meeting organized by the United Nations in New York City. He was also a judge on a big talent show in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Mohombi has worked with many other artists. In 2015, he collaborated with Pitbull and Wisin on "Baddest Girl in Town". In 2016, he worked with Joey Montana and Akon on the "Picky (remix)".

In 2016, Mohombi won a Grammy Award for his work on Pitbull's album Dale. This was for the category of Best Latin Album. He also won a Billboard Music Award for his part in the same album.

Mohombi has competed in Melodifestivalen several times, which is a competition to choose Sweden's song for Eurovision. He participated in Melodifestivalen 2019 with the song "Hello" and reached the final. In Melodifestivalen 2020, he sang "Winners" and also made it to the final.

On December 8, 2022, Mohombi announced that he would be a candidate in the 2023 presidential election in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
