Monroe is a village located in Orange County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 9,343 people lived there. Monroe is part of a larger area that includes cities like Poughkeepsie and Newburgh.
The village is not named after President James Monroe. Instead, it gets its name from Peter Jay Munroe. He was an important state senator in New York in the early 1800s.
The Village of Monroe is in the northwest part of the Town of Monroe. You can find it near NY Route 17 and US 6. Soon, NY Route 17 will become Interstate 86. The main street in Monroe is NY 17M.
