Monroeville's Story: A Look at Its History
Monroeville was named after Joel Monroe, who was the first postmaster in the area. People started settling here in the mid to late 1700s.
The area officially became "Patton Township" in 1849. Later, on January 25, 1951, it changed its name and became the borough of Monroeville. In 1974, it gained even more local control, becoming a Home Rule Charter Municipality.

The U.S. Census Bureau says that Monroeville covers about 19.8 square miles (51.3 square kilometers). Only a tiny part of this area, about 0.05%, is water.
Neighboring Towns and Communities
Monroeville shares its borders with several other towns. To the north is Plum. To the east, you'll find Murrysville and Penn Township, both in Westmoreland County.
To the south, it borders Trafford (also in Westmoreland County). To the southwest are North Versailles, Wilmerding, and Turtle Creek. Wilkins Township is to the west, and Penn Hills is to the northwest. The town of Pitcairn is completely surrounded by Monroeville.

Getting Around Monroeville: Transportation Options
Several important roads pass through Monroeville. U.S. Route 22 is a main road with many businesses along it. The Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) and Interstate 376 also go through Monroeville.
Exit 57 of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is located in Monroeville. This exit connects to Interstate 376. U.S. Route 22 also connects with Pennsylvania Route 286, which serves the northeastern part of the town.
There was once a small private airport called Pittsburgh–Monroeville Airport. It had one paved runway.
The Pittsburgh Regional Transit offers bus services to downtown Pittsburgh from Monroeville. There are also "park-and-ride" lots where people can leave their cars and take the bus.
Amtrak's Pennsylvanian passenger train passes through Monroeville daily, but it does not stop here. Freight trains also use these tracks. The Westmoreland Heritage Trail is a path for bikes and walkers that connects Monroeville to nearby towns like Trafford and Murrysville.
