Mont Mégantic, known as Namesokanjik in the Abenaki language, is a unique mountain in Québec, Canada. It stands alone, like an island in a flatter area. This type of mountain is called a monadnock. It is located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north of the border between Québec and the U.S. states of Maine and New Hampshire.

Mont Mégantic sits on the edge of two local government areas: Le Granit and Le Haut-Saint-François. The very top of Mont Mégantic is the highest point in Le Haut-Saint-François. Many scientists who study rocks believe Mont Mégantic is part of the Monteregian Hills. These hills were formed by a "hotspot" deep inside the Earth, similar to how volcanoes can form.

Where the Water Flows

Mont Mégantic is part of the larger area where water flows towards the Saint Lawrence River. This big river eventually empties into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence.

Water from the east side of Mont Mégantic flows into a river called Rivière Victoria. This river then goes into Lac Mégantic. From there, the water travels into the Chaudière River and finally reaches the Saint Lawrence River. The rest of the mountain's water flows into the Rivière Au Saumon, also known as Salmon River. This river then joins the Saint-François River, which also flows into the Saint Lawrence River.

Observatory and Park

The Observatoire du Mont Mégantic (OMM) is a special building with a large telescope. It is located right on the mountain's summit. This makes the summit the highest point in Québec that you can reach by road!

The mountain is also at the center of the Parc national du Mont-Mégantic. This park covers a large area of 55 square kilometers (about 21 square miles). It's a great place for nature lovers and stargazers.

Sports and Activities

Mont Mégantic is also famous for a bicycle race. The yearly Tour de Beauce bicycle race includes a challenging route that goes over Mont Mégantic. This makes it a tough climb for the cyclists!
