Montgomery is a small town in Grant Parish, Louisiana, in the United States. It is located in the north-central part of the state. In 2020, about 622 people lived there.

Montgomery is part of the Alexandria area, even though it is about 40 miles north. The town was founded in 1712, which is even before New Orleans. It sits on U.S. Route 71, near the borders of Natchitoches and Winn parishes. You can find it on the eastern bank of the Red River.

History of Montgomery

Montgomery is one of the oldest towns in Louisiana. It started as a French trading post in 1719 called Bon Dieu Falls. Later, in 1840, General Thomas Woodward bought the land. He renamed it Creola Bluff.

In 1860, the town was renamed Montgomery. It became an important port for steamboats. This continued until the railroad arrived in 1901, which changed how goods were transported.

Geography and Location

Montgomery is located at coordinates 31°39′58″N 92°53′12″W / 31.66611°N 92.88667°W / 31.66611; -92.88667. It is about 154 feet (47 meters) above sea level.

The United States Census Bureau says the town covers about 2.1 square miles (5.4 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

In 2020, the town of Montgomery had 622 residents. There were 261 households and 114 families living there.

Community Life in Montgomery

Montgomery has several churches that serve the community. These include First Baptist Church, Northside Baptist Church, and Hargis Baptist Church. All three are part of the Southern Baptist group.

Other churches in the area are Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Mount Vernon Baptist Church. There is also St. Luke A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Church and St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church. A United Methodist Church and a Pentecostal church also serve the town.

Local Education

Students in Montgomery attend Montgomery High School. This school teaches students from sixth grade through twelfth grade. In 2022, about 241 students were enrolled at the school.

Montgomery High School offers many sports programs. Students can play football, basketball (for both girls and boys), baseball, softball, and track. The school also has various clubs. These include BETA, Student Council, 4-H, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Healthy Living Club.

In 2022, the Montgomery High School softball team won its first State Championship. The school has a "B" rating from the state of Louisiana for its performance.

  • A. Leonard Allen was a U.S. representative. He once taught school in the Verda community, which is east of Montgomery.
