Daron Oshay "Mookie" Blaylock (born March 20, 1967) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for 13 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was known for playing as a point guard. Mookie Blaylock played for the New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks, and the Golden State Warriors.

College Basketball Star

Mookie Blaylock was a talented point guard who stood 6 feet tall. He was known as one of the best defensive players. He played for Garland High School, Midland College, and the University of Oklahoma. At Midland College, he earned special honors in 1987.

Blaylock was famous for his quick hands. He was great at stealing the ball from opponents. He managed to get over 200 steals in a season five times. He was also chosen for the NBA All-Defensive first-team twice.

Besides his defense, he was a good shooter from far away. He was also a skilled passer. He often ranked high in the league for assists. In 1988, he helped his college team, the Oklahoma Sooners, reach the NCAA championship game.

The New Jersey Nets picked Mookie Blaylock in the 1989 NBA draft. He was the 12th player chosen overall. He quickly became an important player for the Nets.

Before the 1992–93 season, he moved to the Atlanta Hawks. There, he played very well under his new coach, Lenny Wilkens. He stayed with the Hawks for seven years. During his time there, he set team records. He made and attempted the most three-point shots in Hawks history. He also had the most steals for the team.

In 1994, he was chosen to play in the 1994 NBA All-Star Game. Later, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors. He finished his basketball career playing as a reserve for the Warriors.

Mookie's NBA Highlights

  • Mookie Blaylock led the NBA in steals for two years in a row (1996–97 and 1997–98). Only a few other players have done this.
  • In the 1996–97 season, he tried the most three-point shots in the NBA. He also finished second in making three-pointers.
  • He is the Atlanta Hawks' all-time leader in steals, with 1,321 steals.
  • He set new team records for the Atlanta Hawks in 1995–96. He made 231 three-pointers and attempted 623.

Personal Life

Mookie Blaylock has three sons. His twin sons, Daron and Zack, decided to play football for the University of Kentucky. They both graduated from Walton High School in Georgia. His youngest son, Dominick, also graduated from Walton High School. Dominick plays football for Georgia Tech. He used to play for the University of Georgia.

Interestingly, Mookie Betts, a famous baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was named after Mookie Blaylock. Blaylock lives in Zebulon, Georgia.
