Communities in Brevort Township
Brevort Township is home to a couple of smaller communities. These are places where people live, but they don't have their own separate local governments.
Allenville
Allenville was once a station on the Detroit, Mackinac and Marquette Railroad. It is located less than a mile southeast of Moran. J. Alley, who led the Alley Lumber Company, started this community in 1873. It even had its own post office from 1873 to 1891. People sometimes called it "Alley Town." A big fire in 1882 almost destroyed the community.
Moran
Moran is an unincorporated community found along M-123. It is about 13 miles (21 kilometers) northwest of St. Ignace. It's a bit confusing because this community is not part of Moran Township, even though that township is right next to Brevort Township.
Moran was first called "Jacob City." This name came from the president of the German Land Company of Detroit, who sold land there in the early 1880s. In 1883, the president was accused of fraud and removed from the company. Another member, William B. Moran, helped the group by lending them money to buy more land. Because of his help, the settlement was renamed "Moran" in 1883.
A post office was set up in Jacob City in 1882 and then renamed "Moran" in 1883. Later, this post office moved and became the "Allenville" post office in 1898. However, a "Moran" post office was opened again in 1910. It's interesting to note that the name of Moran Township and other nearby places like East Moran Bay and the Moran River come from a different origin. Their name comes from the French word Morin.
