Major Wildfires Affecting Morongo Valley
Morongo Valley has experienced some large wildfires. These fires have caused damage but the community has worked to recover.
The Paradise Fire (2005)
In June 2005, a fire called the Paradise Fire started in western Morongo Valley. It quickly spread and burned about 6,000 acres (24 square kilometers) of land. Seven homes were destroyed, and some walkways in the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve were damaged. All the damage has since been fixed, and the preserve is open again for visitors.
The Sawtooth Complex Fire (2006)
In July 2006, another fire, the Sawtooth Complex Fire, began in Yucca Valley. It was caused by dry lightning. Strong winds and hot, dry weather caused the fire to grow rapidly. It spread through Yucca Valley, Pioneertown, and Big Morongo. Another small fire, the Millard Complex fire, even joined with the Sawtooth Complex fire. Over 100 buildings were burned in these fires. However, Morongo Valley itself had almost no damage.
