The Story Behind Mount Amery
Mount Amery is named after Leo Amery (1873-1955). He was a British politician and journalist. He visited the Canadian Rockies twice.
What's cool is that he was part of the first team to climb the mountain in 1929. This happened after the mountain was already named for him in 1928! He climbed it with Brian Meredith and Edward Feuz Jr.
How Mount Amery Was Formed
Like other mountains in Banff National Park, Mount Amery is made of sedimentary rock. This type of rock forms from layers of sand, mud, and tiny sea creatures. These layers built up over millions of years in ancient shallow seas.
Later, during a huge mountain-building event called the Laramide orogeny, these rock layers were pushed up. This created the giant mountains we see today.
Mount Amery's Climate
Mount Amery has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold, snowy winters. Summers are usually mild.
Temperatures can drop below -20 °C. With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below -30 °C. The best time to visit or climb Mount Amery is from June to August. The weather is usually much nicer then.
