Mount Chephren is a tall mountain found in the Mistaya River Valley. It is located inside Banff National Park in Canada. This park is famous for its amazing mountain views.
The mountain was named after an ancient Egyptian pharaoh called Chephren. In 1897, it was first called Pyramid Mountain. However, there was already another mountain with the same name in Jasper National Park. So, in 1924, its name was changed to Mount Chephren.

Exploring Mount Chephren: Routes to the Top
Mount Chephren offers different ways to reach its summit. These routes are for experienced adventurers.
What is Scrambling on Mount Chephren?
Scrambling is a type of climbing that is harder than hiking but easier than technical rock climbing. The south face of Mount Chephren is a difficult scramble. This is because its upper slopes are very steep. You might also find snow and ice there.
If there is a lot of snow, climbers might need special gear. This gear includes crampons (spikes for boots) and an ice axe. Using this gear means the climb becomes more like technical mountaineering. The best time to try scrambling on Mount Chephren is usually in late July and August. This is when the weather is warmer and there is less snow.
How to Start the Scramble Route?
The starting point for the scramble is at the west end of the Waterfowl Lakes campground. This campground is located off the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. From the start of the trail to the very top of the mountain, you will gain about 1,630 meters (5,348 feet) in height.
What are the Technical Climbing Routes?
For very experienced climbers, there are three main technical routes on Mount Chephren:
- South Face/West Ridge (Normal Route) II
- East Face V 5.9 A1
- The Wild Thing VI 5.9 A3 WI4
