The Waputik Mountains are a cool group of mountains in the Canadian Rockies. They sit right on the Continental Divide. This means they separate rivers that flow to different oceans! You can find them between Banff and Yoho National Park in Canada.
These mountains cover a large area, about 1,069 square kilometers (that's about 413 square miles). They are west of the Howse, Blaeberry, and Amiskwi Rivers. To their east are the Bow and Mistaya Rivers. The range stretches south to Kicking Horse Pass.
The name "Waputik" comes from the Stoney Indian language. It means "white goat," which is a perfect name for a place with snowy peaks and mountain goats! George Mercer Dawson named these mountains in 1884.
What Makes the Waputik Mountains Special?
Many of the highest peaks in the Waputik Mountains are covered in thick ice and snow. This is because they are part of huge icefields called the Waputik and Wapta Icefields. Imagine giant sheets of ice that never melt! These icefields feed many rivers and glaciers.
The Waputik Mountains are also divided into two main parts: the President Range and the Waputik Range. Each part has its own unique peaks and features.
