Trapper Peak is a cool mountain located in Canada. It sits right on the border between two Canadian provinces: Alberta and British Columbia. This mountain is part of the Continental Divide, which is like a giant line running through North and South America. It separates the rivers that flow to the Pacific Ocean from those that flow to the Atlantic or Arctic Oceans. Trapper Peak is also found within the Wapta Icefield, a large area covered by glaciers.

Trapper Peak: A Mountain on the Border

Trapper Peak is a special mountain because it has two main tops, or summits. One of these summits can be reached from a nearby mountain called Mount Baker.

Where is Trapper Peak?

Trapper Peak is part of the Waputik Mountains, which are a range within the larger Canadian Rockies. It's located in a beautiful, icy area known as the Wapta Icefield. This icefield is a huge sheet of ice that feeds several glaciers.

Another mountain, Peyto Peak, is located about 2 km (1 mi) to the north-east of Trapper Peak. Imagine standing on Trapper Peak and seeing another tall peak not too far away!

How Tall is Trapper Peak?

Trapper Peak stands tall at 2,988 meters (about 9,803 feet) above sea level. That's almost 3 kilometers straight up! While it's a significant height, it's not the tallest mountain in the Rockies, but it's still very impressive.

The Story Behind the Name

The name Trapper Peak has an interesting history. It was first named in 1892 by a person named Walter D. Wilcox. He chose this name to honor his guide, a famous trapper named Bill Peyto. Trappers were people who caught animals for their fur, often living in the wilderness.

First Climbers to Reach the Top

The very first time people successfully climbed to the top of Trapper Peak was on July 21, 1933. The climbing team included Conrad Kain, H.S. Kingman, and J.M. Thorington. Conrad Kain was a very famous mountain guide and climber in the Canadian Rockies. Imagine the challenge of being the first to reach the summit of such a peak!
